Random musings about technology and life.

Jack of All Trades, Master of None

A weathered wooden workbench against an old barn wall, holding a laptop, hand tools, a circuit board, a stack of old books and a vintage camera.

Howdy, and welcome. I’m Rick Duncan, and this is my little corner of the internet.

If you’ve seen my homepage, you already know my motto: jack of all trades, master of none. That’s not false modesty. It’s the plain truth. I’ve spent my whole life poking at whatever caught my eye, learning just enough to get myself into trouble, and then learning a little more to get back out.

So who is this guy?

I’m an East Tennessee boy, Knoxville area, on the far side of sixty. Half geek, half Fred Sanford. One half of me wants to know how every gadget works. The other half can’t pass up a box of old stuff at a yard sale. I’ve sold my fair share of collectibles and rare books on eBay, and I’ve got the garage to prove it.

When I’m not digging through junk, you’ll probably find me:

  • Hollering at the TV on a Saturday while my Vols play 🍊🏈
  • Watching a movie or a documentary and forming strong opinions about it
  • Driving the back roads with a camera, taking pictures of old farmhouses and tin roofs
  • Tinkering with my smart home, which some days is smarter than me 🤦🏻‍♂️

Why a blog?

Lately I’ve been learning about AI, and I mean really learning, not just reading headlines. I’ve got a whole crew of AI helpers now that keep my calendar, track my car’s maintenance, and even helped me build this website. Is it just me, or is that kind of wild? 🤔

I figured if I’m going to learn all this stuff anyway, I might as well write it down. Maybe it’ll help somebody else who’s curious but doesn’t know where to start. And maybe it’ll keep me honest about the other things I’m working on, like getting a little more exercise and losing a few pounds.

What to expect

Random musings about technology and life. That’s the promise on the masthead, and I aim to keep it. Some posts will be about AI and gadgets. Some will be about whatever’s rattling around in my head that week. A few might just be a good picture from a country drive.

I won’t promise you a post every day. I will promise it’ll be real, and it’ll be in my own plain words.

Thanks for stopping by. Pull up a chair and stay a while.
