Weighing In: An Update

A paved walking path curving along a calm lakeshore past an empty wooden bench and early-autumn trees, with rolling hills under a clear morning sky.

A little while back I wrote a post called Weighing In. I said I was working on getting more exercise and losing some weight, and that I’d post updates every so often. Well, here’s one. Nobody can say I didn’t warn you. 😂

Where things stand

Not surprisingly, I am off to a slow start. I have been down this road enough before to know that is the way it would be. I have managed to lose one pound each week for the first three weeks. It’s hard to find the time and the good weather for a good walk, just as it is hard to suddenly change your diet overnight.

I’ll say what I said last time. I’m no doctor, and nothing here is advice. It’s just one old boy keeping himself honest in public.

What I’m doing

When I started, I was mostly walking, with plans to add more exercise. I was also paying closer attention to what I eat and logging it with one of my AI helper bots.

I do walk whenever I can and the weather cooperates. One day I ended up spending the day at the hospital while my girlfriend had some medical tests. Anyone who has spent time at hospitals knows there is a lot of time spent “just waiting.” This day certainly had no shortage of waiting time, and this hospital had no shortage of halls to walk. So, I took advantage and got some steps in. Some days you just have to make the best of what you are given.

The logging is still the part that keeps me in line. It’s hard to pretend that second helping didn’t happen when there’s a robot keeping the books. The bot still doesn’t judge me. I still feel judged. 🤔

What’s hard

I’m not going to pretend this has been a straight line. I said there’d be weeks where a Saturday of Vols football and a plate of nachos set me back a little, and I wasn’t wrong. 🍊🏈

Fact is, none of this is easy. Between the weather, the snacks sitting around seemingly calling my name, my knees filing complaints with my body, and other assorted everyday-life things, it’s not easy.

What’s working

On the other hand, a few things have gotten easier. Habits are funny that way. The first week, every walk is a decision. After a while, it’s just what you do.

My small win so far is that day at the hospital. I could have sat in a waiting room chair all day, but I walked those halls and got my steps in anyway. That’s the habit starting to stick.

Next stretch

The plan from here is the same as it ever was: keep it simple, keep it going, and don’t quit just because of one bad week.

If you’re working on the same thing, I’d still love to hear about it. We can keep each other honest.

More updates to come. And no, I still haven’t stopped at Buc-ee’s for anything but gas. Mostly. 😂
