I’ve been putting this post off. You might say I’ve been carrying it around for a while. 😂
Here’s the deal. I’m working on getting more exercise and losing some weight. I’m saying it out loud on the internet because, frankly, that’s the only way I know to keep myself honest.
Why now?
Nobody tells you how fast the years go. One day you’re young and can eat whatever you want. The next day you’re on the far side of sixty, and your knees are filing complaints with management. 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve been lucky with my health to this point, and I know I should have started caring sooner, but here I am. I figure it’s now or never.
I’m not out to be a bodybuilder. I’d just like to feel better, move easier, and be around a good long while. That seems like a fair goal for a fella my age.
I’ll also say this up front. I’m no doctor, and nothing I write here is advice. It’s just one old boy from East Tennessee trying to do a little better than he did last year. If you’re thinking about making changes of your own, talk to somebody who went to school for it.
What I’m doing about it
I’ll keep it simple, because simple is what I’ll actually stick with.
- Moving more. Right now I’m just walking, but I plan to start with more exercise in the next few days.
- Paying attention to what I eat, instead of just eating whatever’s closest.
- Logging it. I’ve got one of my AI helper bots keeping track, so I can’t fib to myself about that second helping.
That last one’s been eye-opening. It’s a lot harder to ignore a snack when you have to tell a robot about it. The bot doesn’t judge me, but somehow I still feel judged. 🤔
Only a few days in at this point, but I’m determined. Today my Vols were playing and got off to a very bad start. So I decided to take my frustrations out on a good long walk. Thirty minutes later I came home to a tie game. Alas, the Vols lost at the last second, but the good news is I still got my walk in.
Updates every so often
I’ll post updates here every so often. Not every day, and not every week. Just when there’s something worth saying, good or bad.
I’m not going to pretend this’ll be a straight line. There’ll be weeks where I do great, and weeks where a Saturday of Vols football and a plate of nachos set me back a little. 🍊🏈 That’s life. The trick is to keep going.
If you’re working on the same thing, I’d love to hear about it. Maybe we can keep each other honest.
Wish me luck. And if you see me in line at the Buc-ee’s, I’m just there for the gas. 😂
